What are the Signs of Drainage Issues?

From slow draining water to fetid smells,  there’s various signs you need to call a professional drainage company. No matter what, it’s vital to act quickly and deal with any issues. With our emergency services, we can save you a great deal of hassle.

Here are the signs of common drainage problems:

Blocked Drains

These usually occur due to a build-up of grease, hair, food, or  tree roots in your pipes, which block the flow of water.

Signs usually include slow draining water, which indicates it’s clogged. You might also hear gurgling noises, indicating that air is trapped in the pipes.

Unpleasant smells are another unfortunate sign. Foul odours wafting up from the plughole are a dead giveaway.

Standing Water

Noticed water pooling in your garden or driveway? That usually indicates a poorly designed or blocked drain.

If it’s been dry for days and there’s still a pond, it’s likely there’s an issue. A soggy lawn is also a sign your water is not draining properly.

Overflowing Gutters

This happens when leaves, twigs or dirt clog your gutters, stopping rainwater flowing like usual. Common signs include water sloshing over your gutters, which means they need a thorough clean. Drips along the wall can also cause damp and damage over time.

Damp and Mould

Poor drainage around your property can let water seep into the foundations or walls. You might notice peeling paint or wallpaper. A musty smell inside your home might also be apparent.

Dark patches of mould may appear, usually in corners or near the skirting boards.

Sewer Backups

If there’s a serious blockage in your main sewer line, it can cause wastewater to flow back into your home. Signs include toilets not flushing properly, or water rising then disappearing. Again, there’s often malodorous smells which are hard to ignore.

Noticed it happening with multiple drains?  If it’s not just one sink, the problem’s likely in the main line.

Damage to your Garden

Bad drainage leads to water flowing where it shouldn’t, washing away soil and damaging your garden.

Look out for exposed roots or bare patches. These can mean that plants are struggling to stay put. Uneven ground might also appear.  Water washing away soil can create dips and uneven surfaces.

If in doubt, contact our drainage specialists before things get worse – it’s cheaper than fixing major damage later.
